Türkiye Records 1,263 Extreme Weather Events in First Eight Months
The Turkish State Meteorological Service has published its “Early Climate Assessment for Türkiye for 2026”
According to the assessment, which covers the first eight months of 2026, Türkiye’s average temperature during the period was 14.9°C, 0.4°C above the 1991-2020 normal. At the same time, 2026 ranked as the 14th warmest year since 1971.
Monthly total precipitation during the first eight months of 2026 was above normal in every month except June.
According to the report, average regional precipitation during the period was 562.2 millimeters, 54 percent above the 1991-2020 normal.
Data from the Turkish State Meteorological Service show that Türkiye experienced an average of 1,047 extreme weather events annually during the 10-year period from 2016 through 2025. In the January-August period of 2026, the number of events reached 1,263.
During the first eight months of 2026, the extreme weather events recorded consisted of heavy rain and flooding, at 33 percent; storms, 20 percent; hail, 17 percent; landslides, 10 percent; heavy snowfall, 8 percent; and lightning strikes and avalanches, 4 percent.
According to data from the Turkish State Meteorological Service, the number of extreme weather events recorded over the past 10 years was as follows:
