The Climate Change Directorate announced that it had held a workshop on sectoral studies and reporting as part of the Project for the Implementation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Intensity-Based Benchmarks for Türkiye’s Emissions Trading System (TR ETS).

According to the announcement, the program was held in Ankara on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 2026, with more than 400 participants.

The workshop focused in particular on the implementation of greenhouse gas emissions-intensity benchmarks under the TR ETS for the iron and steel, cement, electricity, aluminum and fertilizer sectors, which will be directly affected by the system. Participants also discussed the development of a reporting system for the benchmarks and efforts to strengthen the technical capacity of relevant stakeholders.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Mehrali Ecer, deputy head of the Climate Change Directorate, emphasized that Türkiye’s Emissions Trading System is an important policy tool for achieving the country’s 2053 net-zero emissions target.

Ecer said the system was being introduced both to help preserve the competitiveness of Türkiye’s industrial sectors and to prepare the country for the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.

Türkiye’s Emissions Trading System Regulation was published on Aug. 27, 2026.
