Türkiye Secured $500 Million in Climate Financing

A financing agreement was signed between the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Republic of Türkiye for the “Results-Based Water Efficiency and Climate Resilience” project, which has a budget of $800 million.

According to information in the project file, the bank will provide financing equivalent to 500 million U.S. dollars in euros for the project to be implemented by the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ). The remaining 300 million U.S. dollars of the project budget will be covered by the Republic of Türkiye.

Under the project, investments in climate-resilient, modern, and pressure-controlled irrigation systems will be made in the Asi, Western Mediterranean, Büyük Menderes, Eastern Mediterranean, and Kızılırmak river basins, as well as in the Western Black Sea, Kızılırmak, and Yeşilırmak river basins covering the provinces of Bartın, Düzce, Kastamonu, Ordu, Çankırı, and Samsun, as well as investments to strengthen flood control capacity in the Western Black Sea, Kızılırmak, and Yeşilırmak river basins.

The project, which will run from March 31, 2026 to December 31, 2031, aims to improve water management across approximately 45,000 hectares of land and benefit more than 540,000 people.

According to information in the project file, this initiative will mark the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s first “Results-Based Financing Program” to provide financing to Türkiye; it may also be classified as climate finance under the joint climate finance reporting procedures of multilateral development banks.
