The Carbon Sink Forests Proposal Becomes Law

A legislative amendment enabling the General Directorate of Forests to establish carbon sink forests took effect.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry regarding the matter, it was noted that the regulation will make forests more resilient to climate change. Within this framework, and in line with the 2053 net-zero emissions target and national development priorities, the regulation paves the way for the establishment of “Carbon Sink Forests,” which support greenhouse gas emission reductions and enhance capacity for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The statement noted that these forests will not only contribute to Türkiye’s carbon reduction targets but will also create new economic opportunities in the areas of carbon markets, climate finance, and the green economy.

Furthermore, the statement indicated that the expansion of productive forest areas is also intended to provide long-term financial contributions to the Turkish economy through non-timber forest products, ecotourism, rural development, and sustainable production.
