Northern Cyprus Drafting Electrification Master Plan

Türkiye’s energy and natural resources minister, Alparslan Bayraktar, said the Turkish Cypriot administration was working on a master plan for electrification.

According to the newspaper Kıbrıs Postası, Mr. Bayraktar made the remarks at a ceremony marking the signing of a memorandum of understanding on a natural-gas pipeline between Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Mr. Bayraktar said Türkiye planned to propose a target of raising electrification’s share of economic activity to 35 percent by 2035 at the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP31, which is scheduled to be held in Antalya in November.

In keeping with that vision, he said, Northern Cyprus was developing an electrification master plan focused particularly on transportation, tourism and agriculture.

Ünsal Üstel, the head of the Turkish Cypriot administration, said at the ceremony that the plan would be prepared in alignment with Türkiye’s broader electrification strategy.
